Modeling And Forecasting Freight Flows
Objectives of modeling and forecasting freight flows:
In general, infrastructure projects and regulatory measures require a long-term basis and are very cost-intensive. It is therefore essential to thoroughly evaluate their positive and negative impact on traffic. Using our high-performance modeling and forecasting tools we are able to determine the travel demand, to quantify the increase or decrease in traffic loads and to estimate the economic consequences resulting from individual measures.
In the recent past, for example, we have carried out a Europe-wide railway network bottleneck analysis for the international railway association UIC. We have developed freight models as a basis for national investment planning projects for the transport ministries in France, Spain, Belgium and Norway. Besides, our models have been used for the preparation of regulations on the dimensions of goods vehicles (“Gigaliner”).
For the French railway company SNCF, we have developed a specific model, which is used for simulating wagonload freight train marshalling and helps optimizing the number and the network of nodes and marshalling yards needed.
Analysis of the impact of measures projected for upgrading the infrastructure (red = capacity constraints).
